Registration and segmentation of the left ventricular myocardium in the images are important steps to extract useful qualitative or quantitative information about myocardial perfusion. The two steps can be used to improve each other. We propose a robust registration algorithm using a pixel wise minimization of mean squared difference registration method and a level set based segmentation to improve the accuracy of the registration.

Joint Registration and Segmentation of Dynamic Cardiac Perfusion Images Using MRFs

In this paper we propose a Markov random field (MRF) based method for joint registration and segmentation of cardiac perfusion images, specifically the left ventricle (LV). MRFs are suitable for discrete labeling problems and the labels are defined as the joint occurrence of displacement vectors (for registration) and segmentation class. The data penalty is a combination of gradient information...

Evaluating the Effect of Injected Dose of 99mTc- MIBI on the Quantitative Parameters of Myocardial Perfusion Imaging

Background: 99mTc-MIBI cardiac perfusion scanning is recognized as a clinically useful method in evaluating coronary artery disease. By the implementation of new imaging techniques and systems, it seems possible to obtain high-quality images with a lower dose of radiopharmaceuticals. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of injection dose of 99mTc-MIBI on quantitative parameters ...

Automated quantification of myocardial perfusion based on segmentation and non-rigid registration of contrast-enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance images

Introduction Quantification of myocardial perfusion from cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) images relies on manual tracing of myocardial regions of interest (ROIs) and their repositioning frame-by-frame throughout the contrast-enhanced image sequence. Additionally, out-of-plane motion due to patient’s respiration frequently requires that myocardial ROIs to be redrawn. This tedious and potentially...

Automatic Characterization of Myocardial Perfusion in Contrast Enhanced MRI

The use of contrast medium in cardiac MRI allows joining the high-resolution anatomical information provided by standard magnetic resonance with functional information obtained by means of the perfusion of contrast agent in myocardial tissues. The current approach to perfusion MRI characterization is the qualitative one, based on visual inspection of images. Moving to quantitative analysis requ...

Atlas-Based Segmentation and Tracking of 3D Cardiac MR Images Using Non-rigid Registration

We propose a novel method for fully automated segmentation and tracking of the myocardium and left and right ventricles (LV and RV) using 4D MR images. The method uses non-rigid registration to elastically deform a cardiac atlas built automatically from 14 normal subjects. The registration yields robust performance and is particularly suitable for processing a sequence of 3D images in a cardiac...
